About Us

On the First Sunday of Advent, November 30, 1997, St. Gabriel Parish was created out of the worship space on the campus of the former Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. It was consecrated under the patronage of St. Gabriel. St. Gabriel Parish was formed out of the former parishes of St. Lawrence and The Shrine of Our Lady of Perpetual Help, which were officially closed with special Liturgies and ceremonies.

The Archangel St. Gabriel was chosen by popular ballot. The new congregation of St. Gabriel is charged with bringing Good News to West Baltimore County just as St. Gabriel played that role in Salvation history, by bringing the news of a Savior to Mary.

In the New Testament, it is the angel Gabriel who reveals to Zacharias that John the Baptist will be born to Elizabeth. Gabriel also visits Mary, the mother of Jesus and reveals that she will give birth to Jesus. According to later legend, he is the unidentified angel in the Book of Revelation who blows the horn announcing Judgement Day.

To Catholics, he is St. Gabriel the Archangel, the patron saint of communications.
