Alter Servers

MISSION STATEMENT

The Mission of the Alter Server is to provide direct assistance to the Celebrant of the Mass and other liturgical functions and activities in a reverent and respectful manner. It is also a mentoring and developmental program to provide training, discipline, and a sense of responsibility to the youth of this parish.

Included below are just some of the responsibilities that fall with in the scope of the Alter Server program in which youth of out parish can volunteer their time and talent:

Commitment: Each Alter Server must be fully committed to serving in this program. This commitment means showing up each and every time they are scheduled to serve, as well as to arriving at least 15 minutes prior to Mass in order to assist in the preparation for the mass, if necessary.

Reverence & Respect: Each Altar Server must perform their assigned tasks and responsibilities with the utmost reverence and respect for the Mass and during other liturgical functions and activities.

Training Program: Each candidate will receive a one-hour training session, including additional periodical follow-up training and instruction classes. They will also be paired up with a senior Altar Server whenever possible until they are comfortable in performing their assigned tasks and responsibilities on their own.

Individuals interested in becoming an Altar Server must have parental consent, be a parishioner of St. Gabriel Church and have received the Sacrament of Holy Communion. Please fill out the tear off portion of this form and place it in the collection basket and/or contact Tom Michel at 410-292-8403 if you are interested in volunteering your time and talent.

Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist

Honor Christ by distributing Holy Communion at Sunday and weekday Masses. To serve, you must be reliable, responsible, and have a devotion to the Blessed Sacrament. The completion of the training program is required. Please contact Sr. Sonia or sign up here.

Lectors

If you can communicate a sense of prayerfulness and reverence, if you are a daily reader of scripture, and if you are an effective public speaker, you are invited to proclaim the Word of God at Masses. A computer based scheduling system coordinates service of Sunday Mass lectors. Weekday Mass lectors serve one Mass per week. Please contact Sr. Sonia or sign up here.

Greeters

Share your friendly smile! Adults, children, and families of our parish can greet parishioners at the doors of the Cathedral. If you are willing to offer a friendly smile and a few words of welcome to parishioners and guests, we need your help! The time commitment is only once a month, 15 minutes before Mass begins, at the Mass of your choice. Help make St. Gabriel Parish even more friendly. If you would like to help do this please contact Sr. Sonia.

Ushers

Ushers are called first and foremost to a welcoming presence to the Church as the first representatives. While fulfilling this most important role the Usher is also responsible for making the congregation comfortable, maintaining order, and taking up the collection all while being reverential yet not conspicuous. If you feel you have this calling to serve the church please contact John Reardon.

Gift Bearers

The ministry of Gift Bearer enacts an important ritual action; presenting the gifts of bread and wine during the Offertory for the preparation of the Eucharistic table. Gift Bearers are chosen from among the faithful to represent the entire congregation at Mass by presenting the gifts on behalf of all. Volunteering to present the gifts at Mass can be done any time, but it is also a great way to honor God in thanksgiving for anniversaries, birthdays and other special occasions. Serving in this capacity does not require special skills or training. Individuals or families who would like to bring the gifts of bread and wine to the altar during the Eucharistic liturgy are encouraged to sign up for this ministry.

  • The family or group should arrive 10-15 minutes ahead of the scheduled start of Mass and report to the Ushers.
  • They should then take their seat in the reserved pew.
  • If they have not reported prior to 5 minutes before Mass is to begin, the Ushers will select a different famiy and seat them in the reserved pew.
  • The Gift Bearers will be instructed by the Ushers was to when collect the gifts.
